Coaching New Zealand Powerlifters

Scroll

I was a much better coach than I was athlete. This included the pleasure of coaching on the New Zealand team at three world championships:

  1. 2017 in Minsk, Belarus

  2. 2018 in Calgary, Canada

  3. 2019 in Helsingbourg, Sweden

A highlight of that career was doing game day coaching for Brett Gibbs in all three, but particularly in Canada where he broke five world records and became the heaviest human to ever total 10x bodyweight. Squatting 299kg, Benching 214kg and Deadlifting 317.5kg for an 830.5kg total at 83kg bodyweight.

My hope is that venture will be a parallel journey for me; from athlete to coach as goes founder to investor. I didn’t get where I wanted to be as an athlete but I certainly did as a coach. So just the same I’m hoping to be a much better VC than I was founder and operator.

Helping people find that sweet spot of performance under intense pressure is an oy. The game theory of competitive deadlift selection is a nice parallel to round dynamics as well.

My body is literally the opposite of what you want in a powerlifter. I have giant femurs and arms so long they hit the safety equipment in the bench. My brain is however a sucker for it, nothing beats the tight feedback loop that is strength training. So once I started I couldn’t stop.

2015 Commonwealth Champs, Vancouver Canada.
